What are effective strategies for preserving and celebrating artists' legacies?

How can an artist be assured that their works will be properly recognized in the future? How can they effectively tell the story of their practice in their own words, without risking distortion, loss, or theft?

To answer these questions, ArtAttest uses blockchain. This technology offers an immutable, decentralized way to securely store and protect important information over time.

Specifically, it allows for the safe recording of provenance data and the verified linking of artworks to their creators. Building on this, ArtAttest has developed a new method: a digital, online Catalogue based on blockchain technology, designed to safeguard authenticity, authorship, and artistic legacy for future generations.

And, much more importantly, every Artwork and Design is always available and legally verifiable.

How can information be accessed more quickly and effortlessly?

ArtAttest is creating sophisticated artwork recognition technology driven by deep learning. Users can use their smartphones to capture an image of an artwork: one algorithm determines the artwork’s position in the image, while another creates an accurate digital model of the piece. This model is then matched against a reference database to find the closest match, which is linked directly to the relevant record.

This feature is especially useful for gallery and museum visitors, as well as collectors, to quickly locate and verify artworks within a digital Catalogue.

Additionally, ArtAttest is developing a visual recommendation system that uses Artificial Intelligence to analyze artworks and measure stylistic traits through visual features. This enables personalized discovery, allowing users to find artworks that match their tastes and narrow searches by visual similarity.

How can the authenticity of your artworks and design be ensured?

Counterfeiting remains a major challenge in the art industry.

Given the variety of artworks and designs and the market’s complexity, there’s no single method that can completely eliminate fraud. Nonetheless, modern technology now makes it substantially more costly and effortful to commit fraud in certain parts of the art market.

ArtAttest has invested in research and development to incorporate advanced solutions, such as:

  • Near Field Communication (NFC) technology combined with modern cryptography,
  • QR codes as a strong pass-partout to access data,
  • and 3D scanning technology made by our Certificator, to empower the Digital Passport for the Artwork.

Along with additional security measures, these innovations are central to ArtAttest’s evolving authentication system, which aims to boost trust, prevent fraud, and maintain the integrity of artworks over time.

How could the art world improve its connectivity?

Fragmentation is one of the main factors limiting the art market’s full potential. Data often resides in isolated systems, with few protocols widely adopted to facilitate communication between them. This lack of interoperability results in inefficiencies and obstacles within the ecosystem.

To tackle this issue, ArtAttest is actively involved in developing the LutinX Artwork Global Repository (LAGR). This initiative unites industry stakeholders to create a common, trustworthy method for identifying artworks.

Such an identifier needs to be unique, persistent, and resolvable, all while being governed by a framework that is sustainable and as open as possible. In this effort, ArtAttest is investigating decentralized identifiers as a core technology to promote interoperability, trust, and long-term connectivity in the art world.
